Pu-erh tea is a post-fermented tea which can only be made with a specific variety of broad-leaf tea plant. Pu-erh tea is named after Pu'er county in Yunnan, China. It is a very unusual tea, because unlike other teas which are consumed within two years after harvested, it can be over 50 years old and is usually aged at least 5 years. Over this time it acquires an earthy flavor which is due to fermentation.
Pu-erh tea contains antioxidants and other substances: Catechin, Theanine, Beta Carotene, Polyphenol, Vitamin B1, B2, C, E, and Probiotics, etc. Pu-erh tea is considered a medicinal tea in China. Pu-erh tea has been subject to a number of health studies. A number of medical studies have substantiated claims that this tea helps reduce LDL cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure. This tea also helps cut appetite, burn fats, and increase metabolism so that it could assist in weight loss.
This tea has many health effects including reducing gall stone and kidney stone, and anti-cancer, etc. Researchers in China showed that Pu-erh tea is excellent for health amongst all teas for health. Like wine, the old aged Pu-erh tea is quite expensive and rare in the international tea market.
